Omar Freilla

Omar Freilla

Founder, Green Worker Cooperatives, Zero Waste Advocate

Omar was Majora’s very first hire at Sustainable South Bronx. He has used that experience to found the innovative recycling and reuse company, worker-owned Green Worker Cooperatives (GWC). GWC employs local workers to transform industrial debris into useful products, turning the estimated 2,000 tons of construction refuse into “green collar” jobs for local residents, proving that the green economy is a viable tool for modeling innovative solutions to fight the foes and civic costs of low-income, minority and urban communities. The environmental movement may have been focused and branded towards the conservation of natural environments, wilderness, and energy, but now with strong voices like Omar’s, audiences cannot deny that environmentalism belongs to everyone, everywhere.
