Majora Speaks at Netroots Nation Conference

Netroots Nation is a one-of-a-kind event that connects 3,000 educated, affluent, politically active and technologically savvy progressive professionals from all walks of life, numerous backgrounds, and countless geographic locations. And Majora is there today! We’ll be live-tweeting from @majoracarter – along with some tweets from Majora herself at the event! – but be sure to check in on the #nn10 hashtag to see everything that’s happening! She’ll be speaking at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern on a panel entitled Environmental Conflict and Climate Change: The Grassroots vs Big Green

Ever wonder what happens on a visit from Majora Carter?

The Benwood Foundation made this beautiful video of Majora’s recent visit to Chattanooga to speak at the foundation’s George T. Hunter lecture series – we think it might give you an idea of what goes on.

Scaffolding Comes Down on Uptown Girl Power Mural in Hunts Point

It’s a mural! And it’s called “YES SHE CAN…” – and it’s beautiful!

We were pretty excited this morning to take a little mini photo essay on it — we love seeing it peeking out above the buildings full of sunshine, inspiration and positivity!

In Progress – Social Investing

MCG’s job is to unlock the potential in under-served communities across the country – to find social entrepreneurs, inventors, great ideas, and organizations that have not been given the chance or opportunity. MCG aims to find these vanguards and offer them the chance to genuinely invest in their community or their venture.

How do we aim to do this? Invest in them first.

How?

We’re currently early stages of creating the strategy for a new social investment fund, investigating two primary approaches: traditional micro-investing, and new investment approaches that further monetize projects by bringing their true beneficiaries to the table

We are looking at a full range of potential beneficiaries of our projects, like:

insurers (reduced risk)
corporations (carbon and tax credits)
state and national government (reduced social costs)
and angel investors as well

In combination with microfinance strategies, these nontraditional models for monetizing projects would further enable MCG to capture intangible benefits in an investment fund.

We’re working on projects that are designed to generate investment-grade returns, and from there we will develop of an innovative investment product and delivery strategy, ready for the marketplace.
