True North Spotlights Majora's Work

Majora Carter is the founder of Sustainable South Bronx, a program that is “greening” the blighted area of New York City with trees, gardens, and parks—while simultaneously creating Green Collar Jobs for the community’s population. When the only thing surrounding you are landfills, high obesity and asthma rates, power plants down the road, and a concrete landscape with one lonely tree per acre, environmental burdens easily manifest into enduring psychological barriers.

The Majora Carter Group, the green-collar economic consulting firm that spawned from Carter’s work at Sustainable South Bronx, is now working to provide the green economic tools necessary for real sustainability to communities, organizations, and businesses across the nation.

By consulting and advising these in training residents in green-collar jobs and in seeing the economic potential in environmental awareness, the Majora Carter Group, is providing those communities with the tools to help not only themselves but also their community. Understanding the connection between the environment, labor, health, and ultimately the people who must take accountability and responsibility for the environment is the key to unlocking the green potential everywhere.
